Epic Camp - Prologue
I am writing this at the Sydney hotel the evening before the action starts. I am feeling OK after a very easy week to make sure I was fresh. Only hiccup has been the sizeable graze on my forearm I got last weekend when I came off the bike. It looked like it was healing well and I swam on Friday with no dressing and it was fine. This morning though I knocked the scab off it and yuk! It looks pretty ugly and is sore again. So I am hoping it scabs over again before the swim tomorrow morning.
Although I couldn’t be happier with my training since April I know I will be one of the weaker athletes on this camp so I need to play it smart. There is a point system to help us “get the most from our Epic experience” to quote Scott. You get one point each for the following:
4km swimming
each 2.5km after 4km
90km riding
each 35km after 90km
12 km running
each 9km after 12km.
If you get at least one point in each of the disciplines in the same day you get a two point “SBR bonus”.
So, do I chase points or simply do what I need to do to survive?
I am a bit worried that I am messing with the training gods by including a link to all 12 days above but I am guessing that I will not have a huge amount of time to write the updates but I will do my best to capture how I feel while I am in the middle of it. We all know how easily we forget our feelings after some time.

Vernon,
great way to start my Monday morning - reading about your scabs!!
When I look at the program I have set for myself over the next 2 weeks, I think you will have it easy in comparison!
Hope all goes well - key benefit will be to finish the course, so don't try to beat all the young guns you will be riding / swimming / running with / against.
Good Luck,
Greg

Hi Vernon,
I went out and grazed my arm "in sympathy" yesterday mountain biking (also nailed my balls) - read in a high pitch please.
They say, not me - they, that you can actually get stronger the longer you compete/participate in a race/event over several days. Hang in there, tough it out and you will be stronger!
Forster & NZ are nice but its now time for Hawaii!
I look forward to reading about your thoughts and experiences.
Cheers
Marcus
Ps Let us know if those "nice" words on your post about Scott & Gordo work?

Hey Vernon,
What's this, no account of Tuesday 11th January 2005? I heard that the street signs may not be as clear as they could be in the country areas?
I certainly enjoyed your comments about Monday's efforts and I laughed several times in sympathy.
Cheers

Vernon,
Fascinating stuff.
Extraordinary feats of endurance.
I will ensure the staff canteen stocks extra supplies of Chockalte milk on your return.
Good luck for this week.
Greg
